Martinez Addition & Renovation

Martinez, California

Before01Before03

Before

Client needed to add another bedroom to the upper level of the house and wanted to renovate the kitchen on the lower level. Kitchen was small, its layout was cut in several directions by traffic patterns, and it was sharply divided from other living spaces.

After01

The new plan opened up the kitchen to the living and dining areas and created a continuous plane of wood flooring throughout.

After02

Openings to the kitchen were relocated and enlarged in order to create as much transparency as possible between the spaces.

After03

All redundant traffic patterns were pushed out of the kitchen allowing it to expand to the rear of the house. Much more counter and storage space was created and the space was connected to the back yard through a large pair of windows. A wood breakfast counter was included to give the family a welcoming place to gather for informal eating.

After04

Connection from the kitchen to the rest of the house was improved dramatically.

After05

A wall of cabinets was added to accommodate pantry and other storage needs.

After06

A new bedroom was added above the dining room. Its design was completely integrated into the existing building.

The final result was an expanded home that enhanced, rather than interrupted, the clients' daily lives.
