Berkeley Renovation
Berkeley, California

Before
Client was building out the basement so we needed to plan the lower level and find a good location for an interior stair on the upper level. Existing upper level was divided into distinct rooms making the house feel smaller than it really was. New stair would take up considerable space and the location needed to work well for both upper and lower levels.
Solution was to remove all non-essential walls and used the stair, rather than walls, to divide spaces.
Result was a living area that felt larger and a stair location that made perfect sense.
Trim and other materials matched existing wherever possible so that the new open plan made sense in the client's 1915 berkeley house. Flooring contractor was able to match the existing flooring so that it looked like it had always been there.
Downstairs, three bedrooms were added. Existing exterior grade location allowed for large windows and plenty of natural light.
A full bath was also added with colorful tile and more daylight.
The completed project almost doubled the living space and created a larger home that was aesthetically and functionally cohesive.
